Workplace weirdness

You can’t make this stuff up.  From workday obscene phone calls to old-age jokes while interviewing a 55-year-old (for an HR position, no less!), employees do the darnedest things.  And whose job is it to undo the damage?  Why, HR, of course.  Here are a few recent cases you can file under Workplace Weirdness.

There aren’t many people thriving in today’s tough economy, but your employees’ plaintiff attorneys may be the exceptions to the rule. Employment law class-actions are skyrocketing – and the trend shows no signs of slowing.

What was the first bill signed into law by President Obama?  The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.  This legislation makes it easier than ever for employees to sue over pay discrimination-  even actions that took place years or even decades ago.  And it's only the first of several pro-employee moves taking place in Washington. 

Wal-Mart is known for, among other things, its friendly greeters.  But 2009 is giving the retailer a not-so-friendly greeting: a $640 settlement for wage-and-hour violations under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and numerous state violations.

More FMLA Changes

Additions to the Family & Medical Leave Act (FMLA) contain a number of new provisions that impact both employers AND workers.  There are rules on employer and employee notification ... whether "light duty" constitutes leave ... and retroactive settlements of past FMLA leave, among others.
